Choosing The Right Tiles For Your Homes
Selecting the right tiles for your new homes can be stressful and confusing.
We know that because for most of us living in Singapore, we want our materials to be value for money and of sound quality. But most importantly, your purchase of tiles for your new homes is a decision that can be quite intimidating for some, as it is a long-term investment and commitment.
Allow us to guide you through on the different types of tiles available in the market, so you know which type is the most appropriate one to suit the varied needs of your household.
- Ceramic Tiles
- Porcelain Tiles
- Coloured Body Porcelain Tiles
- Glazed Porcelain Tiles
- Homogeneous Tiles
- Half Body Homogeneous Tiles
The two main categories of tiles are Ceramic Tiles and Porcelain Tiles.
Ceramic Tiles
Ceramic tile features a white or red body and is usually recommended for interior application, e.g. walls and floors/areas with light foot traffic only.
Porcelain Tiles
Porcelain tile uses a different type of clay in their manufacturing process and are known to be harder, denser and highly resistant to most heavy impact stresses (including wear and tear). Hence porcelain tile makes an ideal choice for areas of heavier foot traffic such as kitchen floors, hallways, and even outdoor car porch areas as they are relatively more resistant to scratches and chipping.

Coloured Body Porcelain Tiles
A type of porcelain tiles whereby the colour of the body (sides and back of tile) of the tile is manufactured to the same colour as the base colour of the tile surface. A good advantage for using such tile is that it will not seem too obvious should there be any chips on the surface due to wear and tear because the colour of the surface of the tile and its sides and back are quite similar.

Glazed Porcelain Tiles
Another type of porcelain tile where there is a glaze on the top of the surface layer, that gives the tile its pattern or design. As a result, the tiles' body may or may not have the same coloration from top to bottom. This type of tile is a favorite among consumers because of its wide variety of patterns and designs made available.
Homogeneous Tiles
Homogenous tile is also a type of porcelain tile. In fact, most people do not know that they are also known as full-body porcelain tile. As opposed to glazed porcelain tiles, the colours of a homogeneous tile run uniformly through the entire tile body. Most consumers opt for homogeneous tiles because these tiles will not expose a clay base even when chipped. However, the variety of patterns/designs of homogeneous tiles are rather limited due to the manufacturing process.

Half Body Homogeneous Tiles
This type of porcelain tile has a consistent composition of material from the surface until the mid-section of the tile, the remainder of the tile has a generic porcelain body that is different from the tile surface colour. Also known as double loading tiles, they are preferred among consumers if they wish to achieve a perfect tile-to-grout flush.
When applied with epoxy/marble gum to the grout lines of these tiles, it is possible to achieve that seamless grout-free feeling comparable to marble. On top of that, these tiles are considered as a more pocket-friendly alternative as compared to real natural stone.
