Understanding Anti-Slip Ratings for Safer Flooring Choices

Understanding Anti-Slip Ratings for Safer Flooring Choices
When selecting flooring—especially for wet or spill-prone areas like bathrooms, kitchens, an outdoor spaces—slip resistance is just as important as style.
The Pendulum Test, as defined in AS 4586:2013, is the Australian’s standard method for assessing how slippery a surface is when wet. This standard has been formally adopted in Singapore, and is applied under SS 485:2022 as the national guideline for slip resistance classification, alongside with the Ramp-Test slip resistance ratings (R9 - R13).
Floors are given a slip rating from P0 to P5 (P value comes from the Pendulum Test), where:
-
P0 indicates minimal slip resistance
-
P5 offers the highest level of safety under wet conditions

These P-Ratings help builders, designers, and homeowners choose the right materials to enhance both safety and compliance in residential and commercial projects.
Whether you're planning a home renovation or a commercial fit-out, understanding these ratings ensures that your flooring choices meet both aesthetic and safety standards.
Choosing the Right Slip Rating for Your Home
Bedrooms & Living Areas
Opt for R9 / P1-P2—ideal for dry-foot environments where spills are unlikely.
Kitchens & Hallways

Choose R10 / P3 rating to ensure safety in areas that see occasional water or mess.
Bathrooms & Laundry Rooms
Use R11 / P4—perfect for spots frequently exposed to moisture.
Sheltered Outdoor Spaces (e.g. balconies, patios)
Select R11 / P4 to handle exposure to outdoor rain and humidity.
Fully Exposed Outdoor Areas (e.g. pool surrounds)
Go with R12 / P5 for the highest safety in constantly wet, high-risk zones.
Why Not Always Go for P5?
-
Texture trade-offs: P5-rated surfaces are often very rough—great for external ramps but less ideal for areas like bathrooms or barefoot zones .
-
Cleaning considerations: Higher ratings mean more texture, which can gather dirt and require extra maintenance
Choosing the right slip rating guarantees safety, regulatory compliance, and long-term durability. For optimal performance, it's essential to understand and apply the appropriate P-ratings and R-ratings, whether you're installing flooring indoors, outdoors, in barefoot zones, or industrial environments.
